Frequently Asked Questions

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. This includes conditions involving the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which spans from the mouth to the anus.

Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat conditions such as acid reflux, peptic ulcers, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gallstones, liver disease, pancreatitis, celiac disease, and colorectal cancer.

Common symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and changes in stool color or consistency.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help maintain or restore the natural balance of the gut microbiota. They are commonly used to improve digestive health and may help with conditions like IBS and diarrhea.

To reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, maintain a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, exercise regularly, avoid smoking, limit alcohol consumption, and undergo regular screening starting at age 45 or earlier if you have a family history of the disease.

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, medications, and in severe cases, surgery.
